Editor's notes
OpenOLAT is the continuation of the OLAT platform begun at the University of Zurich, now developed by frentix in Switzerland. It is a full LMS in the university sense rather than the corporate one: course authoring by assembling a tree of typed course nodes, strong QTI 2.1 assessment support, curriculum and lecture management, appointments, portfolios. Where most open-source LMSs treat assessment as a plugin, here it is the centre of gravity.
For standards work the picture is specific. SCORM support is a first-class course-node type with a server-side runtime and a result archiver, but it is SCORM 1.2 and only 1.2 — the content-packaging classes in the tree are named for that version and there is no 2004 API endpoint. LTI is the opposite story: both Basic LTI and a properly built LTI 1.3 implementation with deep linking, and OpenOLAT can act as platform as well as tool. There is no xAPI or cmi5 anywhere in the codebase.
Maintenance is not in doubt — 437 stars understates it, since the real activity is commits, and those run daily through August 2026 with a paid team behind them. Deployment is a Java and PostgreSQL affair; budget accordingly.
Choose it for assessment-heavy academic or regulated training, and for LTI integration. Look elsewhere if your course library is SCORM 2004 or your reporting strategy is xAPI.
