Editor's notes
Open edX is the platform behind edx.org and a long list of university and government deployments — Studio for authoring, an LMS for delivery, and an XBlock plugin architecture that most of its standards support hangs off. The repository is one of the larger open-source education codebases in existence: over eight thousand stars, four thousand forks, and daily commits under Axim Collaborative's stewardship. Note that openedx/edx-platform now redirects to openedx/openedx-platform.
Its relevance here is as a destination rather than a tool. If you are shipping SCORM courseware to an organisation that runs Open edX, what you are really shipping to is the SCORM XBlock, and its limits — no sequencing, no rollup, no edition-specific 2004 behaviour — are your limits. If you are choosing a platform and standards support is the axis, understand that SCORM, xAPI and LTI each arrive as a separately versioned package with its own maintainers and its own release cadence.
It is a poor fit for a small team wanting a course online this quarter. The install is a substantial Django estate; Tutor makes it tractable but does not make it small. Against that, the licence is AGPL-3.0 with no seat charges, the codebase is genuinely alive, and the community edition is the same software the large deployments run — which is not true of every open-core LMS in this directory.
