Editor's notes
This is the reference way to get cmi5 content into Moodle, published by the ADL Initiative — the body that authored the specification. It adds a course activity type: a teacher uploads a cmi5 package, learners launch it, and results flow into the Moodle gradebook while the underlying statements land in a Learning Record Store.
Its architecture is the thing to understand before adopting it. The plugin does not launch content itself. It brokers between Moodle, the ADL CATAPULT prototype player and an LRS, which means a working deployment is three services rather than one, and CATAPULT is explicitly a prototype rather than a supported product. Anyone comparing this with Moodle's built-in SCORM module — one component, no external dependencies — should price that difference honestly.
It is well-suited to organisations that have already committed to xAPI and an LRS and want Moodle as one delivery surface among several. It is a poor fit for a school or small provider who wants cmi5 to feel like SCORM did.
Maintenance is real: version 1.1.0, declared stable, commits into March 2026, and issues being closed. It is also a small project — nine stars, effectively one maintainer inside a funded programme. The lineage is respectable, being derived from the older tincanlaunch plugin, but the audience is narrow and the answers to questions will come from the specification community rather than a vendor.
