Editor's notes
Learning Locker is the LRS most people in e-learning can name. Started in 2014, GPL-3.0, Node and MongoDB, with a statement store, a query and aggregation layer, dashboards and visualisations, persona management and statement forwarding to downstream systems. For most of the last decade it was the default answer to "we need somewhere to put xAPI statements that isn't a spreadsheet", and the codebase still reads like a serious product rather than a demo.
Its strengths are the parts beyond the specification: the persona system that reconciles a learner's several xAPI identifiers into one person, the forwarding rules, and a usable dashboard layer. Those are the things you would otherwise build yourself on top of a bare statement store.
The reason to be careful is maintenance, and it is worth being precise rather than vague about it. Master has not moved since November 2021. Learning Pool's own product pages for the community edition now redirect away from it. Outside pull requests opened in 2026 were closed unmerged. The open issues that matter are not features — they are requests to support a MongoDB and Node version from this decade.
That leaves a specific decision. As a reference for how an LRS is put together, or as a system already running that you are not about to migrate, it remains genuinely useful. As a new deployment in 2026, you would be taking on a five-year-old dependency tree with no upstream, and Ralph or a hosted LRS is the more defensible choice.
