lxHive is a self-hosted Learning Record Store: a PHP application over MongoDB that accepts xAPI statements, validates them against the specification, stores them, and serves them back through the standard resources. It supports Basic authentication and OAuth 2.0 authorization code grant, and file storage is pluggable. Installation is a composer install and a setup wizard, documented step by step in the wiki.

It suits a team that wants an LRS they control, on infrastructure they already run, at a scale where MongoDB on one box is enough — a research project, a pilot, an internal analytics stack, or a course on how the xAPI resources fit together. The README's endpoint-by-endpoint table, with links into the specification sections, makes it unusually good reading for that last purpose.

It is not a competitive commercial LRS. There is no xAPI 2.0, the conformance figure is self-reported and short of a pass, the last release is 0.10.1, and the PHP and MongoDB version floors in the README are old enough that a current stack will need checking before you begin.

Maintenance is intermittent rather than dead: last pushed April 2025, eight issues open against seventy-eight stars. Reasonable for a side deployment; think hard before it sits under anything a customer pays for.
