This is the tool ADL wrote to decide whether an LRS does what the xAPI specification requires. It is a Node.js runner that fires the specification's MUST requirements at a live endpoint and reports each one against its requirement identifier, so a failure points at a clause rather than at a symptom. If you are building or buying an LRS, this is the test that matters; every other claim about xAPI conformance is downstream of it.

Two things make it more useful than a typical conformance harness. Tests are traceable — you can grep by requirement number or by specification section, which turns a red run into a specific reading assignment. And the 2.0 work has been done: the suite understands that xAPI moved to IEEE, and its 2.0 battery covers the actual behavioural changes, including RFC 3339 timestamps, context agents and groups, and the retirement of Alternate Request Syntax.

Be clear about what it is not. It is not a client-side or content-side test — it tells you nothing about whether your course emits sensible statements. It writes data that is never cleaned up, so it must never touch production. And it only exercises basic and OAuth 1 authentication, which is not how most commercial LRSs are deployed today.

Maintenance is adequate rather than brisk: real commits through 2024 and a merge in September 2025, from a small ADL-adjacent group. For a specification that is itself stable, that cadence is reasonable.
