Adapt builds single-file responsive HTML5 courses from JSON. You assemble a course from components — text, media, questions, assessments — configure them as data, and run a Grunt build that produces either a web-servable course or an LMS package. It has been going since 2013, is used widely in UK public-sector and corporate learning, and is one of the few open-source options a commercial e-learning team can credibly standardise on.

Its strongest claim is accessibility. The core components target WAI AA, right-to-left layouts and localisation are handled properly, and that work is visible in the codebase rather than asserted in marketing copy. Step locking, bookmarking, question banks and assessment feedback are all built in.

Tracking is deliberately not core. SCORM is the job of the Spoor plugin and xAPI of a separate plugin, which keeps the framework honest but means standards behaviour is configured a layer away from the course.

It is a poor fit for non-developers working alone: this is a Node toolchain, a JSON data model and a theme to write, not a drag-and-drop editor. Nor is it the right tool for a one-off five-slide module.

The project is plainly alive — commits this month, v5.56.2 in April 2026, an active plugin ecosystem and a governed core team.
