The Adapt Authoring Tool is the browser-based front end to the Adapt framework, the open-source project behind a large share of responsive, single-column e-learning built in the last decade. Authors assemble courses from components — text, media, questions, assessments — configure them through generated forms, upload assets, and publish a zip.

Its strengths are the framework's: genuinely responsive output, a substantial community plugin catalogue, and no per-author licence. For organisations producing high volumes of standard interactive content with in-house teams, it remains one of the few credible open alternatives to Storyline or Rise, and the only one with a comparable component ecosystem.

Two honest caveats. First, SCORM is not part of this repository; it arrives through the Spoor extension, which is the piece to inspect if you care about which editions you can ship. Second, operating it is a real commitment — Node.js, MongoDB, a plugin registry to keep coherent, and upgrades that touch both the tool and the framework.

Maintenance is steady but slower than the star count implies. Commits continue through 2026, yet the last tagged release, v0.11.5, was January 2025 and much community energy has moved to the framework itself. It is not abandoned; it is mature, and changing slowly. For a new project starting today, check that the components you need are still maintained before you commit.
